We recommend using the Microsoft Authenticator app with notifications as your default method as it is the most secure and requires a simple tap on an Approve button and is therefore the easiest of all the methods.

1. Open a web browser and visit the MFA set up page: https://aka.ms/mfasetup [Link to mfa setup page]

2. After you sign into your account with your username in the format username@hallam.shu.ac.uk, you’ll see a prompt that asks you to provide more information. Click Next

3. If you don’t already have it installed, download the Microsoft Authenticator app onto your device.

4. On your mobile device, open the app.

5. If this is the first time using the app follow these step 5 instructions. Otherwise proceed to step 6

5.1 You should find that a setup wizard opens. This will vary depending on your device

5.2 If / when prompted – allow notifications AND access to your device’s camera

5.3 Select Skip until you reach Add work or school account

5.4 Proceed to step 7

6. If you have used the app previously and it does not go into the setup wizard:

6.1 On iPhone or iPad select the + icon

6.2 On Android select the 3 vertical dots then select Add accoun

    6.3 Proceed to step 7

7. Select Work or school account which should open the app’s QR scanner

8. Returning to your computer, click on next to get to the QR code page. Note: The QR code in the image below is a dummy code for security reasons.

9. On your computer click on Next on the Scan the QR code screen. A notification is sent to the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device to test your account.

10. On your phone / device approve the notification in the Microsoft Authenticator app.

11. On your computer click on Next
