Your marks go through several stages before being finalised and released. Here’s a breakdown of what happens and what you need to do.

Receiving your provisional marks

Once you have completed your assessments (including exams) your course team will mark them, and you will first be given feedback and a provisional mark. At this stage your mark may be subject to change.

You can find out when you’ll get your feedback in your Assessment Statement, which you can view on My Student Record. Feedback for exams will be released within three weeks of the end of the exam period.

To see your provisional mark log into Blackboard and go to the My Grades/Grade Book section on your module Blackboard site.

If you have questions about your feedback and provisional marks, you should first contact your module tutor to discuss this. You can contact Hallam Help if you are unsure on how to get in touch with your module tutor.

Provisional marks cannot be appealed against, however if you’ve got any questions contact your module tutor or, if feel your performance was impacted by exceptional circumstances (such as illness) contact Hallam Help or book in with a Student Support Adviser for further advice.

Receiving your final marks

Once your provisional mark has been processed by an assessment board, you will receive your final mark. Contact your course leader for exact dates on when your final marks will be released.

You can view your final marks via My Student Record. If you expected to see a final mark and one isn’t there contact Hallam Help for further advice

If you have been given a mark of zero, but believe you have completed the work, contact your module tutor in the first instance.

You must read your overall results very carefully. It is your responsibility to make sure you understand your results as what happens next will depend on the results you receive.

What happens next?

If you’ve passed your assessments no further action is required.

If you haven’t passed a module, you will need to go to the Additional Information column on the My Results tab in My Student Record as soon as possible.

It is important that you act quickly.

If you have questions about your final marks, contact your module tutor in the first instance. If you need support understanding your results and what you need to do next contact Hallam Help or book an appointment with a Student Support Adviser.

Modules that require action from you will be highlighted red. Information on what action you need to take is detailed in the Next Steps section.

Please note Exceptional Third Attempt will not be highlighted in red, instead they will be identified using the code AR.

Exceptional Third Attempt August 2024

An exceptional third attempt is an additional attempt for a module you have failed. It only applies to students who are eligible (affected students will have received an email) and it does not apply if you are retaking a module in 2023/24 academic year.

Why is an exceptional third attempt being offered?

The new curriculum design may impact your ability to retake module(s) in the next academic year, (and only applies to the 2023-4 academic year). If you do not pass all your modules by the end of the July reassessment period, you may be eligible for an exceptional third attempt. This attempt allows you to complete required modules and continue or finish your studies without needing to repeat the module next academic year. This will allow you to continue to the next level of your course without impacting your study, student finance or progression.

If you need further advice and guidance regarding the exceptional third attempt task or how to access it, please contact your Course Leader. For any other queries, please contact Hallam Help- Hallam Help | Sheffield Hallam University (shu.ac.uk).
