If you fail a module or a full year of study you will have the chance to repeat the module or the year.

Before making any decision that could affect your studies, it's important to get advice as early as possible. Contact Hallam Help and they can refer you to the Student Support Advisers to discuss whether retaking a module or full year of study is right for you.

Things to consider

If you repeat a module or a year of study, you will be expected to repeat it in full and attend classes again. You will also be required to pay tuition fees for repeat study.

Repeating a core or elective module means that:

  • you may be charged a fee
  • you must attend all sessions and submit all assessments
  • you are repeating the module as if for the first time unless an Academic Misconduct sanction prevents this.  This means that your first attempt at the assessment(s) will not be capped but any reassessment attempts will be capped at the pass mark.

Elective modules

If you have failed an elective module and want to repeat it, you can choose to repeat the same module again or substitute it with another (if there is one available).

Request to repeat

If you are an undergraduate student, a repeat module will automatically be added to your record.  You will not need to do anything.

If you are a postgraduate student, you need to contact your academic adviser who will meet with you to discuss whether retaking a module or full year of study is right for you. This way you can make an informed decision about if and how you retake.
