There are a number of reasons why you may not be able to log in:
Have you entered your password correctly?
Double-check you have entered your password correctly. Our user account passwords are case-sensitive - check that the CAPS LOCK is off.
Have you entered your user name correctly?
Your user name and student number are not the same. Your user name is alpha-numeric and for most users it is easily derived by replacing the first number in your student number with a letter, as follows: For all student numbers beginning with the number 3, replace this with a letter c to give a user name in the format c3456789. For older student numbers beginning with the number 2, replace this with a letter b and for student numbers beginning with the number 1, replace this with a letter a
Have you enrolled or re-enrolled in the last 24 hours?
Blackboard may not become immediately available as information has to be updated across several systems. Try leaving it a few hours and then retrying. Sometimes it can take up to 24 hours to update.
Have you recently changed your password?
Check that you have updated it on any devices it may be stored on (SHU WIFI or email access on a mobile phone for example). If you don't update them the device can cause your user account to lock temporarily, for security reasons.
Are you in debt to the University?
If you haven't paid your fees you will not be able to log in. Please contact the Invoicing team. Once this has been resolved it can still take up to 48 hours for full access to be returned.
Is the system available?
In the event of scheduled downtime to Blackboard or any associated systems we will post a message a week in advance.
In the event of unscheduled downtime, please wait and try again later.
We update our IT Help Twitter feed with details of service disruptions.
Have you recently finished your course?
Access to most services is disabled for student user accounts around three months after you finish your course. More information can be found on the what happens to my IT account after I leave page.
If you have checked all of the above, try changing your password
If you want to change, or have forgotten your password, go to the password self service page.
If after changing your password you are still unable to log in, contact IT Help or call 0114 225 3333.
